Collapsible lamella bow

Step-by-step instructions for makingcollapsible lamella bow- this bow is good because you can disassemble it, put it in a case, which is very convenient for transportation and easy to assemble for shooting. All materials necessary for manufacturing can be purchased at any hardware store.

Materials and tools:

  1. birch or beech block 60x40x400 mm (20 mm waterproof plywood and epoxy adhesive)
  2. jigsaw;
  3. chisel, rasp;
  4. drill;
  5. sandpaper (from large to small);
  6. bolts with nuts;
  7. some skin (or leatherette);
  8. stain or varnish;
  9. 12 mm slats;
  10. PVA Moment glue.

Step 1

Let's start with the manufacture of a bow handle. It will be required: a birch or beech block, the size of 60x40x400 mm (Fig. 1) or a "bar" of 20 mm of waterproof plywood glued together with epoxy glue (Fig. 2); and the layout (sketch, drawing) of the shape of the handle.

Step 2

Now we take the mock-up of the shape of the handle, transfer it to the bar with a pencil and cut it out with an electric jigsaw. Then use the chisel and the rasp to attach the hobs to the original shape.

Step 3

Let's give the handle a final shape (according to the layout or ideas), make a “cut” where the arrow will go and make the handle comfortably and tightly in your hand.

Now we will drill 2 holes at each end of the handle d = 8 mm for the bolts (the bows of the bow will be attached). Nuts for bolts are better to buy special ones so that you can tighten and unscrew with your hands.

From leather or leatherette cut the gasket in places where the handle is connected to the shoulders.

Such a design of a bow handle is designed for onions with a string tension of up to 10 kg, for more powerful bows such a handle should not be used.

Making a handle for onions with a string tension over 10 kg

Onion handle with a tension of more than 10 kg is made on the principle of a sandwich (see figure). The layers of the handle are carefully glued with epoxy glue and clamped with clamps until the glue dries. The inner layers are made from a denser tree. Then the same steps are repeated.

Step 4

Onion shouldersare made of 12 mm thick lamellae or 2 x 8 mm lamellae, which are glued together with the Moment D-2 PVA glue and clamped with clamps.  

Lamellaeare bent-glued plates that are used mainly from birch, poplar, beech, and have good elasticity and flexibility. Sold in packs or individually in hardware stores.

Step 5

After drying, we cut the lamella lengthways and get the blanks for both onion shoulders. The shoulder length should be - 700mm, width - 30 mm near the handle and 25 mm at the place of fastening of the string.

Step 6

Let's make shelves for bowstrings. From the remnants of the lamella we will cut out 2 plates slightly wider than the shoulder; we apply them to the ends of the shoulders and drill the through holes; We grease the shelves with glue, hammer chops into the holes, grease them with glue, clamp them with clamps and leave them to dry.

When gluing, carefully dry for the recommended time on the glue.

After the glue dries, compress the shoulder blanks together with clamps and process the sides, making them identical.
